Car - Train crashes are all too common in the U.S., and when they happen, they have devastating results. When a 3000 pound car and a train weighing several hundred tons meet- tragedy results. It is the equivalent of a car hitting a soda can. According to the US Department of Transportation there are about 5,800 vehicle train crashes each year in the United States-usually at Railroad crossings. These accidents kill 600 people and injure about 2,300. More than 50% of all railroad fatal accidents occur at crossings with passive, or inadequate safety devices (often none at all!). During daylight about 75% of car train collisions involve the train hitting the car, while at night about 50% of the time the car runs into the train!

Railroad companies must follow strict safety standards. When companies fail to meet these standards, people lose their lives. When a car is hit by a train, causes of the crash may include:

    * Defective or absent crossing gates or malfunctioning signals
    * Failure to whistle or notify victims of an approaching train
    * Overgrown foliage obscuring lines of sight
    * Train disobeying the track speed limit

According to a 2004 report by the National Transportation Safety Board, there are 82,000 crossings in the country without gates. Crossings without gates are seven times more dangerous than crossings with gates.
